  3. 11 years ago I did this solo at Carnival never knowing where it would take me. Just saying yes and putting one foot in front of the other. Looking at all obstacles like collaborative input from the universe. This piece started as a group piece and everyone bailed one by one, making it a solo in the end. I went on to do this solo all over the world in the coming years which led to other stepping stones along my path. Success is not linear y’all. So much gratitude for Carey and Paulette who gave me an opportunity to show my work when no one in LA knew who I was. I’ll be showing work at carnival this month July 27th. See you there!

  1. We’re celebrating Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso’s birthday today, which falls auspiciously on June 4th, Turning the Wheel of Dharma Day. Enjoy these pictures, which capture his lightness, warmth, joy, humility, and deep love for living beings. Venerable Geshe-la’s life story is one of a modern day mahasiddha; a Tantric yogi. From the age of 8, he studied extensively in the great monastic universities of Tibet, eventually earning the title β€˜Geshe’ which means β€˜spiritual friend’. 
After many years of formal study and under the guidance of his principal Spiritual Guide and mentor, His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, Geshe-la went on to spend an astonishing 18 years in solitary meditation retreat in the Himalayas and later, the mountains of northern India. In 1987, ten years after arriving in England, he embarked on a three-year retreat at the first International Kadampa Retreat Center, Tharpaland. It is of no surprise that in all of his teachings, Venerable Geshe-la emphasizes the importance of meditation practice and retreat, as instrumental tools for gaining spiritual realizations and finally the attainment of enlightenment. Although he engaged in extensive solitary retreat, in his Modern Buddhist presentation he shows how we can attain profound realizations through simply combining our daily life with daily meditation practice and occasional retreats.   3. There are a lot of things I don’t share on social media. I live with an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto’s (hypothyroidism) since I was 17 years old (2011). I have struggled with my mental and physical health. In 2017, after grieving a deep loss in 2015, I started SSRIs. I got off them on my own in 2020. The withdrawal was beyond intense. My normal weight was 130–140 lbs, but on SSRIs I went up to 180 lbs. I lost 20 lbs on my own, then dropped 60 lbs in one month during withdrawal. I got down to 109 lbs. I was so disconnected, I couldn’t even read or write. At the same time, I had five surgeries: a benign tumor removed from my chest, gallbladder removed due to gallstones, a colonoscopy, an endoscopy, and a broken pinky toe surgery that left me immobile for months. This all happened while the world was in a pandemic. From 2020 to 2022, I went through a deep recovery. In 2023, I took my power back and decided I was in control - not what happened to me. What you see online is what I choose to share. You don’t see me catching my breath from panic attacks, ER visits, or the severe migraines that come from exhaustion. Being vulnerable like this is hard, but maybe someone out there needs to hear this: you are not alone. I don’t teach yoga, meditation, or do sound baths to look a certain way. I do it because it truly SAVED my life. Feeling great in my body is just a plus. Yoga, sound, + mediation gave me space to feel everything and move through itβ€”that’s real medicine. I believe I’m here to remind others: you can survive whatever you’re going through and rise again. Phoenix energyβ€”always. This is your reminder that not everything is as it seems. Keep going and be kind. You never know what someone is going through.

  3. Headstand variation on this super windy day! If I did this outside I would indubitably fall over (just like my vespa did today πŸ˜©πŸŒ¬πŸ›΅) - This photo makes me think about proportions and how they affect every yoga pose we practice. I saw someone else do this variation and their ankles were almost on the ground and honestly I think it looked a bit better on them with their long legs and shorter torso. When I look at this photo, I realize I'm just all around LONG. I'm about 5'10" with a long neck, long torso and long legs. Long arms and a thin bone structure help me bind easily when I go for spinal twists. Proportionally I can just about manage L sits because I have a decently strong core, but lolasana (pendant pose) where you cross your ankles underneath you with your palms flat on the floor? FORGETABOUTIT! Such a struggle for me! I'll have to compensate soooo much in my core for this long torso to get the tops of my feet off the ground! Struggleville: population Tara πŸ˜‚. It's a posture I don't practice much, but I think I'll try to throw it into my flows more often. We might just play with it this Monday at my warm vinyasa class as well! It’s been difficult to be away during the pandemic as I typically visit 2-3 times per year. But it’s time to be back and organize for future groups. I love sharing this land, this medicine, this culture, and these amazing people. I’m offering a kintu of coca leaves to the burial place of one of my great teachers - Diego. His ashes lie under the Buddha. This is a tradition in Peru as the leaves of Mama Coca are highly revered. It’s a beautiful way to make an offering and something we can only do in South America as the leaves are not found in the USA.   2. Our final scene aired last night on #RHOD completing D’Andra’s journey of inner discovery. Her work on herself through meditation and deep inner work has been a huge theme of this season. But what you didn’t see was the assignments I gave her, the emotional struggles, the tears and sweat she put into this journey. We would shoot for three hours and what was shown was minutes. I applaud those willing to take a deep look inside and I am proud of D’Andra for taking herself on. This takes a lot of strength and bravery. A despacho ceremony is a fire ceremony to connect with the Earth and offer something back with your intentions attached. I first saw this in Peru where the orphanage I work with there was struggling and needed help. They did a despacho to ask for help. It was beautiful and very moving. Since then I’ve done them for many groups and individuals to assist in solidifying their intentions with β€œthe All”. It’s not to be taken lightly as it’s a two way exchange. You are promising to β€œthe All” your commitment to your intention asking assistance on the spiritual plane. It’s a pact - an agreement. I sat with the fire solo after β€˜D’Andra left. Nothing else can be added once it’s offered to the fire. The participant cannot watch it and must turn their back as it’s offered. The next day the ashes are read to see if the offer was received. It definitely was! But did leave a clue that more work must be done. I thank my dear sister D’Andra for trusting me through this journey. Helping others in their becoming is a great honor and one of my favorite things to do in this life.   3. How it started / How it ended. After 15 months of research, unlearning, writing, group projects, late nights, meltdowns, and comprehending the more I learn, the less I know. Learning to listen and quiet my voice to strengthen my case. Master’s in Human Relations, specializing in Diversity, Equity, and Strategic Impact. πŸŽ“ Reflection during the ceremony: Exactly on this date 23 years ago, I was turning the tassel in undergrad at Nebraska. Now, turning another at Oklahoma. I took more from this program than academia and studying the U.S. healthcare system, gun reform, employment law, Black maternal mortality, police reform, yoga x social justice, DEI programs in private sector and much more. In a new way, I learned about fortitude, resiliency, perseverance and grace. To work full-time, teach yoga & meditation part-time, begin a 300hr YTT, while doing an intensive full-time Grad program is not for the faint of hearts. I’m proud of myself for leveraging tools to dig way deep because it would have been easier to quit, which I wanted to countless times. Never quit on yourself. You are your biggest investment. Keep learning, growing, and during the process give yourself grace. On the other end of the hard stuff is a valuable lesson that will shift you in the best of ways. Thank you beyond to everyone who supported me during this time. To my cohort, this program took everything out of us, and seeing it play out in real time🫠.
