Because this one is for the books! 🤎🦌 ✔️ 100% Solo Hunt ✔️ Public Land - CA - DIY ✔️ My Biggest General Season Buck ✔️ 8% Success Rate Unit (less than 1% are this size or bigger) I started my hike early in the dark. Honestly I wasn’t too anxious about the hike.. I knew it would be brutal, but I knew there was potential. The plan was to hike back deeper than I’ve been and look at new country early while bucks were still up on their feet. As I gradually inclined and sidehilled back I finally talked myself into hiking up to the top of the ridiculously steep ridge that I was wanted to avoid. I immediately found sign, beds, trails.. things were looking promising. As I made my way back further I crept over the top of a finger ridge and glassed across to the portion of new mountain that I’d just exposed. I glassed up a buck! I quickly put my spotter on him and saw he was just a forkie. He was a good sign but I didn’t hike that far or up that steep mountain for that. I decided I’d rather continue my hike and pass him. I continued glassing the rest of the face.. then I saw a bigger buck! As soon as I saw him in my binos I knew I wanted to shoot him! I ranged him at 300yds, put my spotter on him, and immediately started making a move. Within minutes the bucks paired up and started feeding away from me.. about to go over the next ridge. I tried to lay prone using my backpack as a rest but I was too low. I grabbed my pack and gun and quickly but quietly crawled forward to get a better angle. As soon as I had clearance I got in a seated position with my backpack standing up as my front rest and used my elbow on my right knee as my rear support. The buck was now at 350 yards and I was looking at him through the scope. My rest wasn’t as stable as I’d like for a shot at that distance but I was hovering back and forth in the kill zone the whole time.. I felt confident. This buck 🦌 Meat on the table and a euro for my wall 🤎 ✔️ 100% Solo Hunt ✔️ Public Land - CA - DIY ✔️ My Biggest General Season Buck ✔️ 8% Success Rate Unit (less than 1% are this size or bigger) I finished my euro mount!! Mostly! I still need to brush off his antlers and maybe whiten up his skull a little.. but I almost prefer the rustic look! Everyone asked if I had him mounted and to be honest.. I didn’t even really think about it in the moment. I didn’t know if I’d be able to do the packout solo and all in one trip. It was a 100 degree day and my priority was to get that meat on ice asap. If I lost meat I’d be devastated.. This hunt gave me memories that will last my lifetime. It is by far one of my favorite hunts!! Having a shoulder mount would have been awesome but I love the look of euros too! Being able to do my own work and do this euro makes it even more meaningful and fits the rest of the story 🤎🦌 feeling grateful for this buck and the life I live. There’s something about being able to go out and successfully put meat in the freezer that will last throughout the year 🙌🏻 and appreciation only outdoorsmen understand.   1. 🏠 The past three days on the HOMETURF, also known as King’s Bend Farms, have been nothing short of incredible! Those of you following along on our YouTube channel have witnessed the development and execution of the vision our owner, @codyestokes, had for the 203 farm. While we knew this project had the potential to be special, what’s been truly surprising is how quickly it has turned into a duck mecca. This trip had been on the calendar for the Road Crew for over eight months, but when we saw snow in the forecast early in the week, we moved everything up a day to take advantage of what we felt would be perfect conditions. Eyebrows were raised as we motored toward the pit and watched thousands of mallards boil out. To make a long story short: on the first afternoon in the snow, we shot seven limits. The second day brought a midday shoot with another seven limits. On the final day, we wrapped up with five limits—and it was the best hunt of all. Sitting near the wellhead on a blistery, snowy midday in a HyVert Blind 2.5’ deep, right behind the camp, @codyestokes, @atollie24, @biglars0, @jordanellis0, and @andrewpbuie brought just two subgauges and passed them around as they picked off drakes only, while also adding our “bonus” ducks. It was the perfect hunt—one of those days that reminds you how blessed you are to have the privilege of chasing waterfowl.   2. I think I speak for most Southern Californians when I say that our original glory fish is, and will always be big, angry homestead yellows. With that said, it was a fun coupla days of sacred, afternoon anchor job bending on a postage stamp size spot w/ a tight crew of friends.
