  1. Believe it or not, Thrift stores and donation centers and not trash dumps They do not have endless resources to triage donated goods, filter sellable items, pay for trash distribution, or fix what’s broken In fact, some centers have reported annual trash fees of over $1 million, which significantly impacts their ability to support their causes 😭 Here are 5 things we should stop donating (and what to do instead): 1. Broken toys It takes thrift stores more time to sort them than to trash them. If you have toys that are visibly broken, check if there are local, community resources that will recycle them (depending on the type of plastic, they may even be able to go in your recycling bin—check your municipality’s guidelines) 2. Soiled or overly damaged textiles These often go straight to the landfill post donation as they are a health hazard. Items with small stains and rips can generally go out on the floor, but they are harder to sell. Soiled textiles should go in your trash, but make sure they are dry (wet textiles can be a fire hazard). Look into donating sheets/towels/blankets to animal shelters, and research if your city downcycles textiles for insulation. 3. Food Donation centers are not food banks. Research what organizations in your community are taking food donations, and make sure to only donate what they are currently accepting. Compost food waste and recycle/trash packaging (make sure to wash out containers before recycling to prevent cross contamination) 4. Outdated baby gear Some donation centers partner with local charities that can connect items with families, but some gear that is out of date cannot be distributed because of liability and safety concerns. Research if the manufacturer of the equipment has a take back program 5. Mugs and Glassware Thrift stores are inundated with these items, and it’s impossible to sell all of them. Many end up getting trashed or break in transit, which create safety concerns. Try to avoid accumulating “merch” which is hard to re-sell. Questions to ask yourself before donating in the comments ⬇️

  3. Morocco was the first Muslim country we visited. There was soo much on social media about how to dress from a white girl POV, but there was hardly anything from a brown Muslim girl POV. I really didn’t know how to dress because I know for tourists, as long as they are respectful, limited covering is fine. But being a brown Muslim woman that threw me off even more. What does that even mean? Will they see me as a tourist? Or will they see me as a jezebel that lost her deen!!! Also, modest dressing has a very subjective definition, which is totally fine. So I asked myself will I get a WhatsApp msg from my mum saying “Binti Allah r kache jobab dite hobe”, which translates to “we have to answer to god”. Sounds super dramatic but that’s Bengali mums for you! So here I am jumping up and down with these transitions wearing outfits that I think my mum would approve. Yes I am 35 years of age and married! 2. Went to Harvard Divinity School, and all I got was the audacity to start a beauty company. ✨ Hi. My name is Alexa Christina Rice, and welcome to my new series, Building Beech Beauty, in which I tell you how I build Beech Beauty as I work on building Beech Beauty. I’ve always loved companies that have some sort of social good mission, just as my grandparents did with Ebony magazine, Jet magazine, and the Ebony Fashion Fair. And for me, I really care about the urban environment. 🌎 So Beech Beauty’s mission is to give away a portion of proceeds to organizations that plant trees in low income urban areas. Came up with the idea for Beech Beauty during the last year of my master’s program at Harvard Divinity School. You might be asking, why start a business during this turbulent time? And I don’t have an answer besides, delusion, audacity, back to delusion. 💫 Some days I wake up and think, what am I doing? Other days I remember the legacy my grandparents built and feel like maybe, just maybe, I can carry that forward in my own way. Growing up around publishing icons taught me the power of creating something meaningful, something that speaks to people where they are. 💕 My grandparents saw gaps in representation and filled them. I see a gap in how beauty connects to our environment, especially in urban spaces where green is scarce but needed most. Divinity school taught me to ask the big questions - about purpose, about impact, about what we leave behind. 🤔 Beech Beauty is my answer to those questions. A little audacious? Absolutely. But then again, nothing worth doing ever started from a place of perfect certainty. Please sign up at BeechBeauty.com so you’ll be aware when we launch. 🌳 #buildingbrands #buildingabrand #entrepreneurthing #blackownedbusinessess #fashionfair #ebonymagazine #supportblackowned
