When spotted in Jessie’s fabulous store @shoprepurpose in Manhattan at a rock-bottom price, despite being designed for a six foot rake, my inner Converter x Bargain-Hunter marched me to the check-out, powerless, dress in hand. The fabric was INCREDIBLE - graphic + technicoloured + SPARKKKKLY beyond belief - my human eyes were spinning out of their sockets. But converting body-con? I consulted my Inner Prada (for a radically contrasting view) and let the inspiration flow. The very first thought I had actually was to cut it into panels but I ended up trying it out as a midi-length body-con dress first before the full chop occurred as I thought I should try exhaust all possibilities before going in for a radical chop. But even as an A-line flowing from the waist there was too much going on, arms included. So, out came the big guns ✂️ - hoorah! Stripping it back was a joy - the original long sleeves were removed, liberating the perfect cap sleeves already designed into the fabric. The sleeves were then converted into the collar and scarf. And once the side-split happened, the one-of-a-kind tunic stood up, commanded the entire studio and rendered us all speechless with its beauty. How many ways can this be worn now? Probably hundreds! Over nothing, or pants, or a big skirt as seen here?! What’s your fancy? And each piece can have a life of it’s own too - with or without the dress! Keep your eyes open on the Upper East Side of Manhattan - it WILL be me in the bodega you see sequined up the nines buying my milk. It’s far too fun to keep in the closet!   3. GREEN GODDESS vibes this one! A heavenly piece of seventies perfection VERY nearly there - but to hold it’s own at the tippity top of the fashion iceberg, I felt that two visual tweaks and a quick skirt-to-pants conversion could elevate into seventh heaven. So using the design from a jumpsuit I already had, although different fabric, pants were created from the skirt keeping to the original dress vibe. Making pants from skirts, by the way, is easy for a dressmaker if you have some you love - its just a question copying the pattern and checking there’s enough fabric volume and length. Look out for vintage maxi dresses - there are millions out there!! Then two new sets of buttoned cuffs, modeled on the existing neckline, were made using offcuts from the new pants - little scraps covering the new matching buttons. Am still self-congratulating over the shoe-covering ankle cuff. Who’d say no to a bit of in-house leg-lengthening? It’s absolutely staggering how many cool features you can create from offcuts; leftover fabric is never ‘waste’ - it’s generally longing to be made into a unique design feature that’s going to set you apart from everyone else in the room. Just think about what - that’s all you need to do! I challenge you to hit up your local machinist with some pants you love the design of and a pre-owned maxi skirt you’ll find on every resale platform. Trust me, you’ll never look back.
