  1. Multiple, preowned @zara dresses sewn together to holler a sustainability message of hope! 💚📣. If you were shown the final dress for the first time, where would you think it came from? Could it stand shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the brand new gowns gracing today’s red carpets? The point is - using new resources are Not Necessarily Necessary - RIGHT?! Doesn’t it make you wonder how different the future of fashion would look if designers used pieces from the past instead of new rolls of fabric? Every garment would have a brilliant backstory - INSANE!! There’s definitely enough out there to play with!! This gown wasn’t actually planned, in fact it was inspired by an @ebay search result from when I was hunting for a dress to convert. Four identical pre-owned lovelies for the price of one - my kind of deal! When you have multiple garments, you can think of them as fabric. I loved the original shape so just exaggerated it to create volume and drama - and it looks just epic worn with a low-slung belt too. So, there are 3 looks for starters and the ante could easily be upped even further - (chestnut velvet ribbon trims?!) and the design even changed again in a myriad of ways! THAT is the beauty of converting clothes. The options are literally endless. Which begs the question (I keep asking!): if we can create fabulous new from fabulous old - EVEN fast fashion - why can’t we make the new clothes we crave from those the Earth’s already gifted us? Thank you for even considering converting one thing in your closet - start with a hemline, sleeve length or neck line. Let’s walk the walk together!   2. Conversion of the sequin body-con dress! When spotted in Jessie’s fabulous store @shoprepurpose in Manhattan at a rock-bottom price, despite being designed for a six foot rake, my inner Converter x Bargain-Hunter marched me to the check-out, powerless, dress in hand. The fabric was INCREDIBLE - graphic + technicoloured + SPARKKKKLY beyond belief - my human eyes were spinning out of their sockets. But converting body-con? I consulted my Inner Prada (for a radically contrasting view) and let the inspiration flow. The very first thought I had actually was to cut it into panels but I ended up trying it out as a midi-length body-con dress first before the full chop occurred as I thought I should try exhaust all possibilities before going in for a radical chop. But even as an A-line flowing from the waist there was too much going on, arms included. So, out came the big guns ✂️ - hoorah! Stripping it back was a joy - the original long sleeves were removed, liberating the perfect cap sleeves already designed into the fabric. The sleeves were then converted into the collar and scarf. And once the side-split happened, the one-of-a-kind tunic stood up, commanded the entire studio and rendered us all speechless with its beauty. How many ways can this be worn now? Probably hundreds! Over nothing, or pants, or a big skirt as seen here?! What’s your fancy? And each piece can have a life of it’s own too - with or without the dress! Keep your eyes open on the Upper East Side of Manhattan - it WILL be me in the bodega you see sequined up the nines buying my milk. It’s far too fun to keep in the closet! Other days I remember the legacy my grandparents built and feel like maybe, just maybe, I can carry that forward in my own way.   2. And that’s a wrap! Still can’t believe that I’m officially done with my PhD after 4 insanely stressful (but ultimately rewarding) years. It’s bittersweet to leave a place where I’ve been both a doctoral and undergraduate student, but I’m excited to start a tenure-track assistant professorship at a new institution in the fall. 🤗 More details on that another time… for now, some thanks are in order! First off, thank you to the friends and family who helped me celebrate over the past two weeks, which has now become a blur of champagne, karaoke, dancing, and bbq. (Especially big thanks to my PhD wife @maureenxiv for flying in for my party!) BIG thanks to my amazing cohort—I do not know how it would have been possible for me to get through these past 4 years without their love and friendship. Thanks to my students at UGA, who gave me motivation by reminding me why I was doing this PhD in the first place. Thanks to my wonderful colleagues at the @hargrettlibrary for giving me the chance to share my research with the wider public and expand my curatorial skills. Biggest thank you to my husband @jmiket for everything that he does for me each day and for being my best friend and biggest supporter for the past 17 years.
