  1. I’ve been told today is the 10th anniversary of @paramore ’s S/T album. Surely that can’t be right…where does the time go? Here’s just a few things I learned while producing that album: 1. Bands do their best work when their creative power is uncompromised and/or fully returned to them. Obviously. 2. Hayley is bar none the finest singer/lyricist double-threat that I’ve ever had the honor of recording, with an absolute creative fearlessness in the studio. I’d never seen anything quite like it before or since. Also underrated as a multi-instrumentalist, btw…and overall just super cool, full of talent and vision. 3. I very quickly found out that Taylor is a bonafide genius. I don’t think he was acknowledged as such previously, mainly due to the complex band dynamics that existed in the preceding years. His taste, skillset, and rapidly growing production acumen made me realize in fairly short order that I had to be very thoughtful about assisting and nurturing, rather than being overly “fixed” in my direction. It was challenging at times. But when you have a mind that capable in your presence, you’ve got to figure out how to not fuck it up by way of your own potentially heavy hand. I learned a lot about that. 4. This was their time. Or rather, the “beginning” of their time. With no specific limitations on their process and direction, and with a remarkably supportive label in the mix, I had the pleasure of watching them flourish in the studio and helping them along as best as I knew how. 5. Instincts are superior to plans. Congratulations to @paramore, and I’m deeply grateful to you for putting your faith in me back then. Congratulations and thank you to the excellent team we had in place: @musicfriend for engineering so impeccably, @gingerchocolate for engineering and all sorts of other clutch help, @andrewsken for stellar mixing, @ilanrubin for his absolutely devastating drum work, @rogerjosephmanning for gorgeous string arrangements, @stevorock101 for repping the label side so elegantly, and @castmanagement for the excellent mgmt…I’m sure I’m forgetting some. Anyway you were all invaluable, it can’t be overstated. Much love.

  3. After a solid three-year run at the @latimes, I was one of 115 people who were laid off from the paper today. I’m so proud of what I accomplished with an all-Latine crew at @delosangelestimes. I was proud to further expand Latin music coverage at the paper, and in music journalism at large, because our communities deserve recognition and critical engagement. And I thank the @latguild for throwing down so that we can leave the paper with healthcare and severance pay. Even if you don’t follow the news on a regular basis, the ongoing loss of so many media jobs is a huge blow to this country — especially during an election year. And the absence of trained journalists will be felt across so many industries. So… I guess now’s a good time to finish my novel-slash-screenplay!   3. From Club Underground DJ Larry G: We lost our home. In the most surreal and difficult event we have faced as a family, our home is now merely ashes. We were fortunate to escape the fire as we grabbed a few important documents, computers, and our most precious girl, Noa & furry family member, Little Willie, along with the clothes on our backs & shoes on our feet.   We jumped in the car fully expecting to return the next day to start cleaning some debris, dust, and check in with our wonderful neighbors. Unfortunately, we were not so fortunate. The next morning we would find everything we owned and the home we spent years working on gone. We had painted every wall, redid every inch of floor and dotted our walls with images of our little family adventures now gone. We are very proud of what we created, and now incredibly devastated by the loss.  Our house is gone, however the memories live on in our hearts & minds not only of our place but of the entire community of Altadena, which seemingly lost every local shop, restaurant and cafe.  We are extremely grateful to be safe and relatively sound while huddling up at Ana's parents place, who graciously opened their home and incredible big hearts.  To everyone who reached out, checked in, called, texted, emailed, messaged, we thank you and please know we appreciate you showing your love and we share that same love for you.  We lost a home, we keep the memories forever.
