  3. I was 10 years old when Jim Phillips created the “Screaming Hand” for Santa Cruz Skateboards. He was born in San Jose, California and lived his whole life there making rock-art posters and custom graphics for surf boards and skate decks. His design aesthetic is one I have always admired for its bold simplicity and grab-you-by-the-face imagery. I was 20 years old when I saw Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead for the first and only time in 1995 at the Tampa Stadium. Jerry passed away shortly after that show. I distinctly remember a very profound “Eyes of the World” in the second set of that left quite an impression on my developing mind. Jerry was born in San Francisco, California and his right hand was certainly an icon of Rock and Roll. His middle finger was missing due to a very unfortunate accident when he was a young boy. (Involving his brother and an axe!)
