  3. 🥓🍒 Bacon & Cherry Oepsies (Braai Skewers) Ingredients: 2 packets streaky bacon (approximately 500g) 1 cup glacé cherries Skewers (wooden or metal) For the Marinade: 2 cups tomato sauce (ketchup) ¼ cup honey ¼ cup dark brown sugar ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce ¼ cup soy sauce ¼ cup oil (vegetable or canola) ¼ cup lemon juice 2 chopped chilies (optional, for heat i didnt add this time) ⸻ Instructions: Prepare the Marinade: In a bowl, combine the tomato sauce, honey, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, oil, lemon juice, and chopped chilies. Mix well until the sugar dissolves. Assemble the Skewers: Thread a cherry onto a skewer. Take a strip of bacon, twist it, and thread it onto the skewer next to the cherry. Repeat the process, alternating between cherries and twisted bacon strips, until the skewer is filled. Repeat for all skewers. Marinate: Place the assembled skewers in a shallow dish or tray. Pour the marinade over the skewers, ensuring they are well-coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, preferably overnight, to allow flavors to infuse. Braai (Grill): Preheat your braai or grill to medium heat. Place the skewers on the grill and cook, turning occasionally, until the bacon is crispy and cooked through. Nothing about my life has changed since last Wednesday. There are dishes piling in the sink, and nothing really to do but watch TV and play board games. All the same, except she’s not on this Earth any longer. No need to take time off work because what would I even do with my days? How do you even begin to grieve and get closure in a time like this? ⁣⁣ ⁣ Thank you to everyone who knew and sent kindness or flowers or food or gifs they knew would make me smile. And thanks to everyone who has understood my need for space and not gotten mad if I haven’t replied to you. I find it really hard to answer the endless stream of notifications coming from my phone normally — and turns out when those messages are about your mom’s death, it’s even tougher. I read them all, but I just don’t have the energy to reply. And I have “Mother’s Day” blocked in my inbox so send your pitches elsewhere. ⁣ ⁣⁣ She loved music, especially The Beach Boys and The Clash (maybe there are concerts whereever she is and Dennis and Joe are playing a double-headliner just for her). She loved crystals and peacock feathers and playing online games. She was so sentimental—a July cancer, through and through. And she lived the last days of her life alone in a hospital bed. ⁣⁣ Stay home. Wash your hands. Wear masks. Take care of each other 🤍⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I love you, Mama Hawk. Forever.

  3. Well 2021, what a fucked up year. Not sure whether to thank pandemic fatigue, work burnout, or mental illness. But I’m ending the year feeling better than ever, and ready to take on new adventures. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I made the decision to leave Apartment Therapy last month. Whoever said “do what you love and you’ll never work in your life” must not have loved lifestyle content. I enjoy sharing my home life here and on AT  — truly! — but it’s disorienting to feel pulled in three directions every hour of the day, in every space where you’re supposed to feel sheltered.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Something as simple as organizing a bathroom drawer gets complicated because I can do three things with that impulse:⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 1️⃣ Film it for IG. (Which takes longer and ugh maybe I need to put on some makeup because I’m breaking out.)⁣ ⁣⁣ 2️⃣ Put it on the list of ideas for Taryn Cleans it All, then wait for a team to film me cleaning it out. (I hope they think the “after” is good or I’ll probably spiral wondering if I’m perfect enough for the Internet.) ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 3️⃣ Just clean it! Enjoy the clean drawer and feeling of accomplishment! (…Until guilt sets in that I could have shot this for IG. Next time I’ll commit harder and cycle all over again.)⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I made a lot of choices in the last two years to favor the first and second options here, and I’m so thankful that you’ve all followed along. It all feels worth it when I get a DM saying how much I’ve helped you love your home again. (Or maybe just find a great dusting glove.) But that led to extreme burnout for me, and I had to step back a bit from being chronically online and make a change. I left AT and found a new role as Managing Editor of Reforge, where I’ll be publishing content that helps people in tech own their careers and make valuable, sustainable impact. I don’t expect to post a lot about that here (more Twitter and LinkedIn — unless y’all are interested?), but that brings me to the great news…⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I’m feeling mentally healthier than I have in a while. And I actually MISS Instagram. And I miss sharing my life here. So I guess this is me saying: I’m back baby! And I have so much to share.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Photo dump from H2 2021 coming soon. 💛✨✌️
