I wrote this blog post in August 2017, well before the #fyrefestival “dueling documentary” saga on @netflix & @hulu. #linkinbio I’m sharing here now because I still believe some of these reflections to be true. Many of us (myself included) have an unhealthy relationship to social media. If you, like me, find yourself feeling worse after a 30 minute social media binge (not better), it may be time to re-evaluate your social media use. If social media is having a negative impact on your relationship or friendships, it may be time to re-evaluate. That said, some of my views have evolved since writing this. While I still believe honesty on social media is important, I don’t know that it is the ultimate solution. Social media is really just entertainment in the end, and we all would rather see beautiful beaches, private jets, and delicious food than the mundane. I don’t know that this desire will ever change. And forced “honesty” on social media, may lead to further unhealthy attention seeking behavior. I think one key solution is AWARENESS. Let’s be aware that what we see on social media is a highly curated take on a small percentage of someone’s life. All of us struggle, regardless of how beautiful our feeds may look, how rich we are, or how much celebrity we’ve attained. All of us are flawed. Let’s be AWARE that social media giants have thousands of brilliant engineers working in the background whose sole purpose is to hack our psychology to keep us coming back for more. If you’re battling social media addiction, you’re one person fighting against an army, so be kind to yourself. Cc: @tristanharris By cultivating this awareness, perhaps we can counteract some of the negative psychological issues amplified by social media like depression, anxiety, and low self esteem. We can begin to build real communities to support one another offline. Social media is not going away and it is not the source of all problems. But I think we as users and more importantly the companies who profit from our use, can do better.
