I’ll wait… When my kitchen flooded I was desperately in need of a wine in the sun so of course I had to heard to ambiente tapas as one of the few restaurants in Leeds that catches the evening sun! We were here at 7pm and the sun was still shining 🥰 DISCLAIMER: this only works when going out as a two as the terrace is quite small. We got the last 2 seats and there were 2 (or maybe 3?) other couples & 1 table of 3 out there. 📸 pictured: 🍅 pan con tomate (a must) 🧀 Halloumi, hummus, cucumber, tomato (really fresh summery option) 🦑 Calamari (a particularly good one & big portion) 🥬Hispi cabbage, fermented chilli butter, cashew purée (fav dish of the night!) 🥔 Chorizo y patatas (got to be done) 🫛Green beans, pine nuts, sun dried tomato (might sound boring but these are my fav green beans!!) 🍷 Cuatro Rayos, Verdejo (crisp dry white) Other dishes I love on the menu: ✨all of their croquetas ✨the deep fried goats cheese ✨the ibérico pork Still got lots on the menu I want to try though! This week is #fashionrevolutionweek, a movement on a mission to make the fashion industry safer and fairer for its workers and our planet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fashion Revolution Week marks the anniversary of the collapse of Rana Plaza building on the 24th April 2013. In this tragic event more than 1100 garment workers lost their lives and another 2500 were injured. The victims were primarily young women. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @fash_rev campaigns for safety, transparency, equality, fair wages, sustainability and amplifying of marginalised voices within the fashion industry, to name a few of the core issues. This is why we ask “Who Made My Clothes?” and “What’s In My Clothes?”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ At Care Wears, ethics have always been at the very core of what I do. From the very beginning, I have only used ethically and sustainably produced garments certified by organisations such as @fairwearfoundation, @peta, and @globalorganictextilestandard among others. This ensures safety and ethical practices within the supply chain. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ These garments are then screen printed by myself with designs made by me. All the finishing touches, like packing your orders or sewing neck labels and attaching tags is also all done by hand by myself 💕 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The goal for the future of Care Wears is to grow in the most sustainable way possible and doing what I can to bring about positive change in the fashion industry. Hello friends (& VAUTE friends!!) Launching today is my new brand HUMANS WE LOVE, finally, today! 9 months officially working on this nearly every day - and 9 months before that I wrote the plan for HumansWeLove.com as a luxe ethical jewelry brand (with some vegan gowns too fine maybe i guess) 😆hoping to transfer my skills in ethical fashion to ethically sourced gemstone & recycled gold engagement rings. BUT, when I hated my actual jewelrymaking class and, my biz plan didn’t win a female entrepreneurship grant I’d need for the starting inventory - I realized there might be a part of the plan I COULD start: vegan zero waste gowns - sourcing Deadstock, fabric remnants, vintage trim, and handmade elements by female artist entrepreneurs supporting themselves and those they love, around the world, and then bringing designs to life that incorporate all of these unique and wondrous elements. And to my surprise - it was fun, really fun. I could take everything i had learned about each element of the process (concept, sourcing, development, hiring, business modeling, branding, website design) and utilize it but with the many hard lessons I had learned. I could choose to create again this time with a very important understanding, that I am limited. In learning so much about my very tangible limits as a human and entrepreneur - I have this time chosen to create this brand with those limits in mind to create a TINY & SLOW business model that feels sustainable and allows for me to have a sustainable life (🤞🏼!) while making the impact I can for the earth, animals and artists. More soon! Ahhhhh FIRST *SHELTER* DOG in the White House whaaat!!!! 💃🏻Millions of amazing and healthy dogs and cats are killed each year in America - but it’s an easy fix if we choose to give them homes instead of shopping for the perfect breed from a breeder. If you’re flying out of Rome, @autogrill just created this amazing all vegan WOW burger with vegan cheese, bacon and a turmeric bun it’s so good 😍🍔 Found these with zero Italian skills 🙈 scouring all the sites (happy cow, Yelp, google etc) asking everyone and checking irl menus so if you’ve found other spots pls share below!! Thoughts on grappling with an unruly body in clothes for unruly times: The leisure, ath- or otherwise, category has always been tough for me. A key element of the sartorial armor that supports my body confidence is polish—clean lines, a general put-togetherness. Styles that look disheveled, even artfully so, worry me: can I look messy and fat without looking messy because I’m fat? I tread with caution. And then, the pandemic. Suddenly, I had nowhere to go. All clothes were at-home clothes. And, bonus, I was increasingly pregnant. My unruly body would not be contained within clean lines, could barely be held together, refused anything but deep comfort. And so my unruly body slid into unruly dressing. I think quite a bit about when my soft belly will once again accept being zipped into sleekness. If it ever will. If I can continue to construct the same image of myself. If I want to. If unleashing my unruly body in unruly style will unleash what I most fear: my unruly mind. Do you think it’s silly that I tag brands I wear? Do you find it even a little, perhaps, tacky? Here’s the thing: shopping while fat is very hard, shopping ethically while fat is even harder and Instagram and the fashion blogs before it have been my primary source of clothing discovery for a decade. Traditional media, mall shopping, even word of mouth amongst friends exclude me. It wasn’t until I saw trailblazers like @gabifresh and @nicolettemason that I started to find clothes that fit both my body and my style. For a long time, fat fashion felt like a whisper network. Now it feels like Instagram serves that function, at least for me. And so I’ll continue to name the brands I wear here. This is, after all, a style-centric space for me and tagging brands is my way of paying forward what I learned from fat fashion bloggers in defining my style based on how I actually wanted to dress, not just the best I could do with the dregs I could find. To me, shouting out the clothes that fit me and maybe helping other people find clothes that fit them is part of the solution. I’ve been thinking about why I used to react so strongly to thin friends doing/discussing fad diets (even though they would have called them “wellness” or “self care”). It felt like a personal rebuke. Because, sure, they loved me and weren’t staging interventions to tell me I was too fat, but they were thin and clearly felt they were “too fat” (as evidenced by their determination to change their bodies), so… At this time of year, with so much advertising preying on our desire for this year to be better than last, for ourselves to get that reset button we all wish life really had, and with so much of that based around our bodies, it can be hard to differentiate between those things that genuinely reconnect us to our bodies and Big Bad Diet Culture. It took me a long time to find any nuance there and even now that I have, this time of year can be hard. So to anyone out there doing a fitness or eating challenge, or certainly anything that can be labeled a “cleanse,” give some thought as to how you talk about that. Or why you feel the need to talk about it at all. And maybe examine your motivations as a fun New Years reset on examining your relationship with fatness. 🎉🔔DONE with 16 rounds of chemo and finally got to ring that bell! (Swipe for full video)🎉🔔 I cannot even express the relief and emotions I’m feeing about being done, especially since my last round was delayed TWICE due to various ailments making the past 2 weeks really tough for me mentally. I can’t fully celebrate just yet since I still need to weather the inevitable side effects for the next week or so. But I know I’ll be feeling lighter and more optimistic now that I have completed this huge milestone. The follow-up imaging (mammogram and MRI) from last week showed significant positive changes and I can’t wait to discuss the results with my surgeon on Friday. Speaking of my surgeon, surgery is scheduled for mid-March so I have a few weeks to recoup and then on to the next challenge of recovering from my mastectomy. Thank you again for the outpouring of your support and kindness on this journey! All of your messages, words of encouragement and care packages have meant the world to me! Happy Friday! The sun is peaking out at us here in Austin today, so I’m re-arranging my whole day to get outside and enjoy the sun while it lasts 🌤 Some of my favorite things to do when it’s nice out in Austin: - Hike at Walnut Creek Park with @livin.la.vida.mocha 🐶 - Hang out at Barton Creek greenbelt with friends and pups (or barking/doggy springs if it’s not too crowded). - Have a picnic or do some yoga at Zilker Park (another dog activity 🤪) - Find a nice outdoor patio to eat and drink like @eastciders_bartonsprings or @eatdrinkdocs - Paddle Board at Town Lake (a goal for this weekend if it doesn’t rain) - Bike somewhere nearby like @muelleratx with my neighbor. - Mountain Bike at Walnut Creek where Mocha can run along with us (not possible now because the trails are too wet) Most of these can be done anywhere, not just Austin! A few problems with @shein_in include : 📱Promotes over-consumption and hauls (not something we are interested in) 📱Offers Trendy clothes at cheap prices and is the perfect equation for poor quality clothes 📱Promotes the "use and throw" culture 📱No clarity on the working conditions and wages 📱Many Cases of cultural appropriation have been witnessed 📱There is a severe lack of transparency related to policies, supply chain and production processes 📱Shein is famous for stealing designs from independent artists and designers 📱The clothes are of such low quality that clothes are not made to last Aside from this, they rank very low on the fashion revolution transparency index and @goodonyou_app describes "shein as a platform we avoid." Sabya spoke to Forbes India, on the completion of twenty years in this industry, elaborating on his philosophies “I like clothes made by hands because when you create something out of human hands, it’s never perfect in the sense that imperfections give it personality. In today’s day and age, when the world gets more and more mechanised, it’s the things that you do by hand that are becoming more and more luxurious.” And this collaboration with H&M, a manufacturing entity that produces clothes for customers worldwide, will lead to garments being produced on an industrial scale and to the loss of uniqueness. While H&M has taken a few positive steps with several programmes that promote recycling, eliminating hazardous chemicals, it still comes under an unsustainable, fast-fashion model. The supply chain is uncertified and the practices are not transparent at all. On the other hand, Sabyasachi also started a ‘Save The Sari’ project to cut out the middleman and source directly from the weaver to support local artisans. Partnering with a shady brand like @hm where the workers who make the clothes aren’t paid a living wage and there is no idea in which factories these are made seems like a slow fashion disaster.
