I’ve always loved companies that have some sort of social good mission, just as my grandparents did with Ebony magazine, Jet magazine, and the Ebony Fashion Fair. Came up with the idea for Beech Beauty during the last year of my master’s program at Harvard Divinity School. You might be asking, why start a business during this turbulent time? And I don’t have an answer besides, delusion, audacity, back to delusion. 💫 Some days I wake up and think, what am I doing? Other days I remember the legacy my grandparents built and feel like maybe, just maybe, I can carry that forward in my own way. Growing up around publishing icons taught me the power of creating something meaningful, something that speaks to people where they are. 💕 My grandparents saw gaps in representation and filled them. I see a gap in how beauty connects to our environment, especially in urban spaces where green is scarce but needed most. Divinity school taught me to ask the big questions - about purpose, about impact, about what we leave behind. 🤔 Beech Beauty is my answer to those questions. A little audacious? Absolutely.   3. I don’t like my mom keeping Karwa Chauth anymore. There, I said it. It’s not because I hate culture or can’t “respect traditions.” It’s because I love her too much to pretend this one makes sense to me anymore. When I was younger, Karwa Chauth always felt like this grand, romantic day. My mom dressing up, the house smelling like mehndi and food that no one’s allowed to eat yet, that little chaos of excitement. And I used to love helping her get ready, picking the perfect suit, doing her makeup, clicking pictures. It all felt like a celebration of love. But the older I get, the more I realise how unfair this love looks when you zoom out. Because it’s always women who have to starve, fast, and perform rituals for someone else’s well-being while the men in the house continue their day as usual. No hunger, no dehydration, no headache, no faintness. Just another day. And my mom who’s in her late 50s now, who already forgets to eat on time, who frequently takes medicines for her health is still expected to stay hungry and thirsty all day to “pray for his long life.” How does that make sense? How can something that puts a woman’s body at risk somehow add years to a man’s? And then, in the name of culture , after a full day of fasting, women are made to break it with literal sugar after hours of no food or water. Like… how is that not dangerous? 🤨 I used to tell myself, “it’s her choice, let her do what she loves.”But now, it just feels like a choice shaped by years of conditioning wrapped in glitter, disguised as devotion. And it hurts to watch. Because I know she does it out of love. Because I know she’s proud of it. Because I know I can’t take that away from her without feeling like the bad guy. But I also can’t unsee what I see now that this “beautiful” ritual was built on the idea that a woman’s sacrifice is proof of her love, and a man’s comfort is proof of his power.
