Trying 'La Rage d'Adam' (9b/+): 50° steep, a complex boulder problem on perfect mini pinches, 100% natural, all in 50 meters of tufas. Not sure if it really gets better... 🤯 Together with @jakob.schubert we made a short trip to the Verdon to hop on two routes, Jacques on DNA (9c) and Georges on La Rage. 🥖 The psyche was high and conditions were great, and we could both get the moves done on our routes fairly quickly! 😎 Here you can see me on the crux boulder problem (~8B), which comes after a short 8b+ and a bit of a rest. I still feel far away, but at the same time it feels possible, especially since i trained for Oliana steepness, and not a steep roof (i felt like a bag of potatoes 😂). I love climbing so much 💛 - shout out to @alpsolut.pictures for the drone footy!

Does climbing get any better than this? 🤩 Devil's Tower (Bear lodge butte), rising 300 meter above the Wyoming flatlands. A magical place with trad climbing on splitter crack between basalt columns. A paradise for climbers, but also a sacred place for the indigenous tribes. It was a dream come true to climb this tower, and @louderthan11 did an incredible job filming it. @petzl_official @jonglassberg

💥 Auto locking munter hitch: Add braking power with this simple technique. Just the other day I topped out the final pitch of a route and forgot my belay device at the last anchor. My partner and I were swapping leads and belay devices (the @petzl_official Gri-Gri and Reverso) which makes for efficient transitions and eliminates the need to secure yourself to the anchor, but it also requires you remember to grab the device off the anchor 😂. We went from swapping leads to block leading at the end and that threw a wrench in the equation. Considerations: - Thinner ropes work better - Always keep your brake hand on the brake strand!! - Use both hands to feed rope in and through the hitch - Clip the locker through the tongue of the hitch and around the load strand - Be sure the munter hitch is oriented in belay mode, as opposed to lower mode - I’m pulling on the load strand in the video to show the locking power but this isn’t something you do when operating the hitch. Capabilities: ✅ Simple improvised assisted braking solution when belaying the climber from above ✅ Material economy Limitations: ⛔️ Adds friction when pulling the rope through the hitch ⛔️ Difficult or impossible to lower someone once loaded #isyourguidetrained #trainanchors #seekqualifiedinstruction

“JUMBO PUMPING LOVE” is NOT the name of the hardest rock climb in America. It could have been. So how does a climb gets its name? This story started over 3 decades ago, when a striking, but faint line of pockets - viewed through my binoculars - eventually became one of the most difficult and famous rock climbs in the world. On a cold November day in 1991, perched near the summit of remote Clark Mountain, I embarked on a top down inspection of what was the most king line I ever found. Wild swings into the wall to place bolts revealed section after section of V-hard boulder problems. My psyche was high as I slowly and methodically continued down, placing bolts. It became abundantly clear to me that this entire climb would go, but at a standard much more difficult than the hardest grade in 1991. I thought maybe this would be possible as a multi pitch climb. I tried it, was unable to make it to the halfway anchors, so I set my sights on the other king line to the left which I named Jumbo Pumping Hate (5.14a). Fast forward to 2008, when Chris Sharma redpointed my original king line project. In true Sharma fashion, he brought it to a new level by climbing the entire wall in one very long pitch. He named this “Jumbo Love” and graded it 5.15b. It stood as the hardest and proudest sport climb in America for 14 years. There were a few repeats by America’s strongest sport climbers. In 2013, I belayed Sharma on a hard start (bolted by Jorge Visser) to Jumbo Love. This was like adding a 5.14b, with no rest, to a long 5.15b. I tried to do the math… how hard could this be? The direct start to Jumbo Love remained un-redpointed until October 2022, when Seb Bouin linked it all together. So how does a route get its name? What would Seb name it? Do you honor the history in your name as Sharma did with Jumbo Love, or do you call it something completely different? Seb messaged Chris and me. With a little back and forth, he decided on “Suprême Jumbo Love” (5.15c). Usually I’m not granted the opportunity to experience such a beautiful area long enough to be involved in the seasonal change. Colors progressed from deep greens into golds, oranges, and crimson reds as the valley came into new life visually. Simultaneously, a hush began to progress over the area as November wore on and the number of tourists began to lessen. I thought that a few months had given me an understanding of the area, but after seeing the whole valley washed in a new light, it reopened my eyes to the time it takes to cultivate a true relationship and gain understanding of a place past a superficial glance. The new line of @soill climbing shoes is finally here! From left to right, the Stay is soft and ideal for volumes and fiberglass holds, the Street comfortable and great on technical face to slight overhang, the Catch is a perfect all around slipper, and the Torque for when you’re ready to climb very steep also great for pockets. After feeling them out indoors, tryout slab, technical face and full overhanging route with toe hooks and bicycles and just having them perform amazingly. I had enough daylight to rush out to the local boulder to try them on real rock. The heels feel great, the rubber is very sticky and the precision plus comfort is there! Now I need to give them a try on proper hard routes outdoors, indoors they’re feeling great so I’m truly excited to see how they perform, stay tuned!

Patagonia 1987: After about 10 days of waiting out bad weather after our Cerro Torre climb, the barometer started to rise. Typically the Supercanaleta is approached via traversing some valleys around the north side of Fitzroy, but since we were at a basecamp for Cerro Torre we decided to approach the climb via the Col de la Hombre Centado, or the Col of the Sitting Man. This approach meant we had to head back up the glacier past the approach slopes to Cerro Torre, and then climb out of the valley via a diagonal ramp. Once on the Col we would bivy, then drop down the other side to the schrund and the base of the couloir. In this shot of Walt he’s soloing the final few meters to the Col, with the Supercanaleta in the gully to the left of the smooth ridge above him. #climbing #patagonia #fitzroy @metoliusclimbing @guenergylabs

Patagonia 1987: Both Walt and I would have told you that we were rock climbers first, and ice climbers second. After all, Yosemite was our home area and El Cap our home crag. I’ve always felt though that for the big mountains it’s important to be well rounded and proficient on rock, ice, and mixed climbing. With that said Walt and I had climbed ice together exactly once prior to this trip. That was on a fast melting Silver Strand in Yosemite. It fell down, as Werner predicted, two days after we climbed it. In Patagonia we climbed fast and strong. We still thought we could break Mug’s speed record. After soloing the first 3,000’ of ice, we had about a 1,000’ of ice and mixed climbing before we started rock climbing. Patagonia 1987: This is 27 year old me on top of Fitzroy. I have a great shot of Walt as well, but unfortunately it isn’t scanned. After 45 minutes on top we started down. We were “onsighting” a huge complicated descent - but we found the top rap anchors right away, so how bad could it be? The reason we chose to descend this south facing ridge was because about halfway down you dip around the ridge onto the east side, which puts you out of the wind. It gets dark about 3-4 raps, and now the wind has kicked up again. We’re rapping by headlamp and are finding the anchors without too much trouble though. We eventually get to an anchor where we could go two different ways. One way looks to be out into the middle of nowhere on a huge face - our headlamp beams don’t show much. We opt to continue straight down. That was the last obvious anchor. We’re definitely off-route now. The wind is howling. And we’re starting to use a lot of our meager rack for anchors. We do find some remnants of fixed ropes here and there and cut pieces out of the ice to use to sling blocks. At one point I pass an old dicey looking anchor and keep going, thinking I can reach a small ledge that I can just barely see with my headlamp. I come up about 2’ short and take a deep breath and drop onto the ledge. I yell to Walt to use the other anchor. Even with our clothes battened down the wind pummels us and it’s like being sand blasted by ice particles, but we finally make it to the col. With the wind battering us we find the most protected spot we can and bivy for a few hours. #climbing #fitzroy #patagonia @metoliusclimbing @guenergylabs
