We got married! Since these are the times we live in, we would like to take this opportunity to announce our marriage. On July 24, I entered into a marriage contract with Miyuki. After living together for about a year and a half, we decided to get married. Miyuki has little experience in climbing, so I hope to be able to greet those whom I have not yet been able to introduce to you little by little. Miyuki is such a profoundly lovely person, full of composure, intelligence, and deep care, and she shows her childishness and humor when she is allowed to. We will learn “love” in the days ahead. We will savor and enjoy each day richly filled with love and awareness, feeling the true meaning in each moment. We are still in our infancy, but we hope you will warmly watch over us. 2. また一緒に登ろうね🔥 The challenge for the Paris Olympics with Futaba Ito ended with the final Olympic qualifying series in Budapest. We placed 10th in the overall , which was enough within the Paris Olympics, but due to the rule that only two male and two female athletes from each country are allowed to participate, we could not make it to the games. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people who supported us. Thank you very much. Results are everything. And the result was completely irrelevant. I believe that it is a competitor and a coach who moves back and forth between these two dimensions. During the years that I have spent with Ito, I have had the opportunity to watch her grow and develop through competition. I also learned a lot of important essences of life through being close to one climber, trusting each other, challenging each other, rejoicing with each other, sometimes reflecting on each other, and exchanging opinions. That is a lot of joy we received, regardless of whether we participated in the Paris Olympics or not. Fuchan, I really appreciate the whole experience. Thank you very much! And thank you for your hard work. @futaba_ito @choku @tomosport @basecamp_mgmt

  1. “JUMBO PUMPING LOVE” is NOT the name of the hardest rock climb in America. It could have been. So how does a climb gets its name? This story started over 3 decades ago, when a striking, but faint line of pockets - viewed through my binoculars - eventually became one of the most difficult and famous rock climbs in the world. On a cold November day in 1991, perched near the summit of remote Clark Mountain, I embarked on a top down inspection of what was the most king line I ever found. Wild swings into the wall to place bolts revealed section after section of V-hard boulder problems. My psyche was high as I slowly and methodically continued down, placing bolts. It became abundantly clear to me that this entire climb would go, but at a standard much more difficult than the hardest grade in 1991. I thought maybe this would be possible as a multi pitch climb. I tried it, was unable to make it to the halfway anchors, so I set my sights on the other king line to the left which I named Jumbo Pumping Hate (5.14a). Fast forward to 2008, when Chris Sharma redpointed my original king line project. In true Sharma fashion, he brought it to a new level by climbing the entire wall in one very long pitch. He named this “Jumbo Love” and graded it 5.15b. It stood as the hardest and proudest sport climb in America for 14 years. There were a few repeats by America’s strongest sport climbers. In 2013, I belayed Sharma on a hard start (bolted by Jorge Visser) to Jumbo Love. This was like adding a 5.14b, with no rest, to a long 5.15b. I tried to do the math… how hard could this be? The direct start to Jumbo Love remained un-redpointed until October 2022, when Seb Bouin linked it all together. So how does a route get its name? What would Seb name it? Do you honor the history in your name as Sharma did with Jumbo Love, or do you call it something completely different? Seb messaged Chris and me. With a little back and forth, he decided on “Suprême Jumbo Love” (5.15c). 2. The Singularity 4 years ago I walked the path I’ve now walked more than any other in the forest. It was then I saw The Singularity for the first time and told myself “I have to climb that in my lifetime”. In 2022 I moved to Squamish and dove head first into granite bouldering. As the year went on, some of my projects went down and others started to feel possible. I’d frequently try The Singularity, but always felt so far from being able to do the crux move. It remained as the ultimate goal for myself, not only because it’s way harder than everything else here, but since it would require me to improve a great amount as a granite boulderer. It wasn’t until last fall that I improved enough to execute the crux movement. Shockingly, it felt easy and I knew it was not a matter of if I could do the problem, but rather when. Over my next 2 sessions, I fell after the crux 4 times total, and then it rained for the rest of the season. In the New Year, I drove south to bishop in search of dry rock and good weather. I was greeted by an open landscape, sun, perfect conditions, and more opportunities to grow as a climber than I would’ve anticipated. By the time I started my 20-hour drive home, I felt like I was ready to close my chapter with The Singularity. Last week I was having a pretty mediocre session. My skin and energy levels were low, and the crux move was feeling far away from the start. I told myself and my friends that I’d give it one last try to end the session. I pulled on, and gave the try that would end the journey. Upon topping out, I looked down and imagined a 17-year-old me staring back. It felt surreal to be standing in the place I envisioned back then, especially since the vision was nothing but a youthful dream. You really need everything to come together to have that moment, I guess that’s what The Singularity is. More to come on this one later this year🤟🏼 To clarify, I started matched on the jug like Nalle and Lucas. I think the first move adds some difficulty and makes the problem feel more complete. 3. Zazen V15 (post break FA?) Today, Mother Nature was kind enough to bless me with some amazing weather and keep my psych high. When I walked up to zazen this morning I wasn’t sure how it would go. I pulled on and sent 2nd try, by myself, in perfect weather. It was a beautiful moment that I will cherish for a long time I’ll save my feelings and story telling for somewhere else other then my Instagram, this one is too special for me to try and cram into a few paragraphs. Here’s some spray about the boulder and grade proposal: Zazen is a sit start to gibbs cave, established by Harry Robertson in 2003. Story maybe goes that a hold broke recently after Harry climbed it, and it hasn’t seen an ascent since. ill propose V15 for this one. It breaks down to a 3 move v11/12 on crimps into the hardest single move I’ve done. The crux move is off a small left hand mini pinch, and you do a a huge jump to the start rail of gibbs, then you climb the V8. I knew that linking the move would be hard from the bottom, but on the send go that move still felt damn hard (a feeling I normally don’t find when sending boulders in Squamish). I’m a bit hesitant to propose V15 as I haven’t tried many in the world, but this boulder is as my style as it gets so if I was to climb V15 it makes sense it would be in this style. Enough rambling, I’m still in a bit of shock from this one and need more time to gather my thoughts. Longer story/write up and the video to come soon. 3. Patagonia 1987: This is 27 year old me on top of Fitzroy. I have a great shot of Walt as well, but unfortunately it isn’t scanned. After 45 minutes on top we started down. We were “onsighting” a huge complicated descent - but we found the top rap anchors right away, so how bad could it be? The reason we chose to descend this south facing ridge was because about halfway down you dip around the ridge onto the east side, which puts you out of the wind. It gets dark about 3-4 raps, and now the wind has kicked up again. We’re rapping by headlamp and are finding the anchors without too much trouble though. We eventually get to an anchor where we could go two different ways. One way looks to be out into the middle of nowhere on a huge face - our headlamp beams don’t show much. We opt to continue straight down. That was the last obvious anchor. We’re definitely off-route now. The wind is howling. And we’re starting to use a lot of our meager rack for anchors. We do find some remnants of fixed ropes here and there and cut pieces out of the ice to use to sling blocks. At one point I pass an old dicey looking anchor and keep going, thinking I can reach a small ledge that I can just barely see with my headlamp. I come up about 2’ short and take a deep breath and drop onto the ledge. I yell to Walt to use the other anchor. Even with our clothes battened down the wind pummels us and it’s like being sand blasted by ice particles, but we finally make it to the col. With the wind battering us we find the most protected spot we can and bivy for a few hours. #climbing #fitzroy #patagonia @metoliusclimbing @guenergylabs
