  1. One of my favorite vintage ensembles is this entirely original 1920s swim set (from @fabgabs). The swim cap still has its tag (fortunately on the right side!) and the swim boots are from @gypsynationvintage. The swimsuit—an amazing find—was made ca. 1925 by the Bradley knitting company (more on them in a future post), and decorated with art deco koi fish. A beautiful genre of objects from the Eighteenth Dynasty, many dating to the reign of Amunhotep III, depict young women swimming, holding in their outstretched hands a symbol that is also a receptacle for a cosmetic or scented unguent (the more fragile wooden spoons may have used for ritual water dispensing). The symbols that the girls hold can change, but all relate to the Egyptian New Year or re-birth, and now, the beginning of July, we approach the time when the ancient Egyptians observed the heliacal rising of Sirius and celebrated the beginning of the new year. So one girl on a cosmetic spoon holds an antelope, a zoomorphic manifestation of Hathor, or another a duck, appropriate to the marshy environment where couples celebrated the New Year. A tilapia fish with lotus blossoms coming from its mouth can even replace the swimming girl as the handle of the cosmetic spoon; the tilapia and lotus together symbolize rebirth, and the lotus cluster can be used in a cryptographic hieroglyphic writing of “true of voice,” “vindicated,” an epithet of a soul that passes the judgment of the weighing of the heart. Studying such clusters of images together is key to understanding the function and meaning of objects manufactured over three thousand years ago! #egyptologist #1920s #vintageswimwear #vintageswimsuit #1920sstyle #artdeco #vintageswimcap #maxsennettbathingbeauty #classichollywood

  3. Looking forward to our return to Paris in early December, we recall our last time there, in the @restaurantletrainbleu (video by @hugobaillet and John). I model a 1920s dress and cocoon coat from @morphew_world), paired with a French rock crystal and glass necklace (Lalique in style) from my collection, and the color and material provides the basis for the Egyptology lesson today. Although glass is known from the early 18th Dynasty, including beads with the names of Ahmose and Hatshepsut, glass first becomes more prominent during the sole reign of Thutmose III. The earliest definite evidence of all stages of glass production appears around the Amarna Period, but at least some of the early glass is manufactured in Egypt. Much of the glass is of a blue color, apparently meant to mimic stones such as lapis lazuli and turquoise, consistent with one of the terms for glass being iner wedjeh “molten stone.” Early glass working in Egypt employed glass rods and the forming of vessels around a clay or sand core attached to a metal rod. Additional rods of glass could be used to decorate the vessel. Some glass appears to have been carved like stone, and there is also evidence of mosaic glass—in which glass rods of different colors are twisted together. The multicolored glass results in the frequently attested wavy lines of color, such as blue and yellow (almost certainly evocative of the combination of gold and lapis lazuli) that is used for vessels in the shape of fish as well as small jars. The manipulation of materials and colors to produce a simulacrum of colored stone is the basis of the alchemical thought of the ancient Egyptians, nowhere better in evidence than in the Opening of the Mouth ceremony during which the priest (who will later officiate over the enlivening of a statue or mummifed body as statue) foresees the spiderweb-like artist’s grid that will allow the sculptor to extract the carved image from its natural surrounding material. 1920s beaded cap from @morphew_vintage and shoes from @mamzelleswing. #vintageparis #1920sfashion #1920sdress #flapper #flapperfashion #letrainbleurestaurant #garedunord #vintagestyle
